也说说《了不起的盖茨比》的中译
16 11 2006年这几天网上在讨论《了不起的盖茨比》巫宁坤译本的优劣，恰好网上就有这个译本，于是我把它下载和原文做个比较。比较了开头几句就发现翻译得实在是不怎么样，没有再往下比较的必要。我觉得开头就有问题是很能说明问题，不像在中间出现的差错，还可说是疏忽导致。何况开头这几句话其实并不复杂：

younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice
that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.
“Whenever
you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that
all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve
had.”
He didn’t
say any more, but we’ve always been unusually communicative in a
reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than
that. In consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all judgments, a
habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made
me the victim of not a few veteran bores.

他没有再多说什么，但是我们一直就是很不寻常地以不把话说透的方式进行沟通的，因而我明白他的言外之意要多得多。结果，我习惯于不对任何人做出评判，这个习惯让很多性情怪异的人向我敞开心扉，也让我成为不少向来无聊的人的受害者。

这几句话的逻辑关系很简单：“我”当时容易接受他人忠告，所以“父亲”的话对我产生重大影响，导致“我”养成了不爱评判他人的习惯。巫译没有弄清楚这个行文逻辑，对“vulnerable”和“In
consequence”的翻译都不准确。对“advantages”的理解也不妥当（此处指批评者自己具有的种种优势，包括下文所说的天生就有的道德感（”a
sense of the fundamental decencies”），不止是优越条件）。此外，
“younger and more vulnerable”的比较级没有译出，把“all the people
in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve
had”这一现在完成时译成了过去时，对这种语法细节的把握，是颇能反映一个人的语感的。
这些都算不上大错，基本意思还是准确的，不过说译得如何如何好，甚至捧之为“大师”，“只要翻译一篇文字，就能当得起翻译家之称”，那就太过了。对前辈翻译家，我们固然不要去蔑视，却也没有必要过分仰视。在中国封闭的年代里，精通外文的人本来就不多，有条件接触到外文原著的人更少，没有条件去比较译文与原文的差异，难以对译本的精确程度做出评价。有些翻译家从前之所以出名，乃是中文的功底好，译笔优雅，却未必是外文的功底好。他们也是限于当时的条件，不容易接触到外文材料，没有好的外语环境，语感就要差一些，也是可以理解的。在他们那一代人当中，他们还是很杰出的，无需太过苛刻，所以他们还是值得我们的尊重的，但是没有必要把他们当成难以企及的高峰。

对于傅雷等老一辈翻译家，也应持同样的批判态度。
当然，我们也必须看到现代汉语在表现力方面和英语的差异，一般而言，英译汉是远比汉译英要困难的多。
