Xiao Chuanguo’s resume in question was originally found at the website of the Institute of Neuroscience (ION)(http://www.ion.ac.cn/seminar/cv4seminars/041210_CGXiao_CV.doc) where it was posted when Xiao gave a seminar talk. In the resume, Xiao claimed that he’s been an Associate Professor of New York University(NYU) since 2001, boasted that he won the America Urological Association Achievement Award in 2002 and American Urology Association Lapides Grand Prize Award in 2003, and mixed journal papers and conference abstracts all together.

1. Xiao has never been an Associate Professor at NYU. According to the webpage of the List of Faculty of the Department of Urology, He had been an Assistant Professor until Sep. 2005, and is a Clinical Associate Professor after then. There are also other webpages and documents indicate that he was an Assistant Professor instead of an Associate Professor: the webpage of Lab Experience of the Department of Urology (according to the Wayback Machine, the date that Xiao as an Assistant Professor first appeared on the webpage is after May 02, 2004), and page 128 of New York University Bulletin 2003-2006 (published on Jan. 24, 2005). In Sep. 2005, A netizen of the New Threads contacted the Faculty Records Office and was told that Xiao has been an “assistant professor since 2001“. A personal letter addressed to Xiao by the Dean of NYU School of Medicine also indicates that Xiao has been a Clinical Associate Professor since Sep. 1, 2003. The letter was used as evidence for Xiaos lawsuits against Dr. Fang and was disclosed by Xiao himself. Note that the date that Xiao became a Clinical Associate Professor in the letter contradicts other evidence. No single document or webpage from NYU shows that Xiao has ever been an Associate Professor.

Xiao’s position as an NYU Associate Professor or even a Professor not only appears in this resume, but also other official websites, for example: Shanghai Mingyuan Holding Company Ltd., where Xiao was an independent non-executive director; Xiehe Hospital, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, where Xiao currently holds professorship; Journal of Clinical Urology, where Xiao is the editor-in-chief; and The Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, where Xiao was awarded.

2. Xiao is not a winner of the AUA Achievement Award. He is neither listed as a recipient of any AUA award at AUA’s website.

3. The so called “American Urology Association Lapides Grand Prize Award” is actually the Grand Prize of “The International Jack Lapides Essay Contest on Urodynamic and Neurourology”. The award with such name has never been listed at AUA’s website.

4. Up to Sep. 2005, Xiao has published only 4 papers in international journals among the 26 publications he listed in his resume. There were only 9 references citing the 4 papers, and some of them even doubt Xiao’s theory and procedure, while Xiao has never responded.

The properties of the resume, a Microsoft Word document, are as follows:
Author DEPT OF UROLOGY
Last Saved By SSWANG
Company Long Island College Hospital
Date Created 06/12/2004 1:20 AM
Date Last Saved 06/12/2004 1:20 AM

It is interesting that as late as Jun. 2004, the company name the company name stored in Microsoft Word in Xiao’s computer was still the Long Island College Hospital (LICH), where Xiao claimed in his ION resume that he was the Director of Urologic Research and the Director of New York Kidney Stone Center from Jan. 1991 to Dec. 2001. LICH is a teaching hospital of the State University of New York, where Xiao as he claimed was an Assistant Professor for 10 years (Jan. 1991 to Dec. 2000). More interestingly, Xiao sued LICH in 2002 for discrimination and lost the case in 2003, see the Summary Order from the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Excerption:

Plaintiff alleged that LICH discriminated against him on the basis of his Chinese national origin by terminating his employment as a research director; by forcing him to work in a laboratory that was used for the storage of paint, tiles, and windows; by refusing to relocate him from a building that was closed by LICH; by not providing him with a contract; and by not paying him for work he performed in China … We have considered all of plaintiff’s arguments and have found each of them to be without merit.

The resume was removed from the website after Xiao sued Dr. Fang Shi-Min for libel in China. After then, the list of 2004 ION Seminars Series (http://www.ion.ac.cn/seminar/seminars_2004.htm) was also modified to remove the announcement of Xiao’s seminar, and was deleted completely from the website at last. The list can now still be found at the Wayback Machine, where there’re several historic versions. In the latest version, Xiao’s seminar was not listed, while in a earlier one, it states:

Dec 10, 2004(Friday)
Chuan-Guo Xiao, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Department of Urology, New York University School of Medicine, USA. Professor and Chairman, Department of Urology, Director, Institute of Urology, Tongji Medical University, P.R.China. Host PI: Dr. Tian-le Xu

Interestingly, Dr. Rao Yi, who was sued, along with the New Threads and Dr. Fang, by Xiao for libel in the United States, appeared in the list 12 days prior to Xiao:

Nov 29, 2004 (Monday)
Dr. Yi Rao
Professor, Department of Neurology, Associate Director, Institute of Neuroscience, Northwestern University, USA
